The Volunteer Coastal Patrol was founded in 1937 as an auxiliary service to the RAN. It is the oldest maritime Search and Rescue organisation in Australia and the largest Search and Rescue group in NSW. The Patrol was granted the ‘Royal’ prefix by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1973.

Dedication
The Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol is an organisation of dedicated men and women who devote over 800,000 individual hours of skilled effort every year to provide the highest standard of marine Search & Rescue and Public Marine Training services to the NSW boating community. There are twenty-six divisions located up and down the NSW coastline.

Communication
Every day Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol radio bases help hundreds of boat owners get the most out of their boating through Logging On, Tracking Sheets, MRSS, Radio Checks, Weather and Sea Conditions and, if an emergency arises, trained rescue crews that can make a life-saving difference.

Education
Coastal Patrol marine training for the boating public is second to none. Coastal Patrol courses create better boaties through comprehensive training in a wide range of courses including Boat Driver's Licence; Marine Radio Operators' Certificate of Proficiency (mandatory for VHF and HF radio use); Seamanship; Navigation; Meteorology and First Aid.
